Kilakkarai Lighthouse
Kilakkarai Lighthouse is located at Keelakarai, Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. The Lighthouse about 20 Km from the nearest railway station Ramanathapuram. Fishing is the main activity here. The coast along Kilakkarai between Thoni Thurai and Valinokkam point has a chain of islets and shoals. A flag mast erected in the port was the only assistance to the mariners. with the increase in fishing vessels in the vicinity the area needed to be marked by a powerful and reliable light.
Further, The Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Government of India starded the construction of new Lighthouse in the 4th November 1977 and completed in 28th February 1979. The 30-meter-tall lighthouse has beamed its first light since 2nd October 1979. The first Light beacon is PRB-42 ‘C’ type Equipments, later on, the then illuminating source has been replaced by type ‘D’ 200W / 30V sealed beam lamps in April 2003. Later on, the then illuminating source has been replaced by Tideland Rotating Beacon TRB-220 - 70 W/ 240 V Metal Halide lamp on February 2009.
