Pandiyan Tivu Lighthouse And Dgps Station
Located on the Western side of the Gulf of Mannar in Tuticorin, Pandiyantivu Lighthouse and DGPS Station serves as main lighthouse for the Port of Tuticorin. There are number of islets/reefs in the region. Tivu is the Tamil version of Sanskrit ‘Dweep’ (Island). Pandiyan Tivu an island earlier was known as Hare Island. It is connected to the main land by an all weather road after reclamation. One can approach Tuticorin by Rail/Road/Airways, than public conveyance via road of 18 KM is available upto green gate near Tuticorin port afterwards 5 KM road upto lighthouse has to be covered without any public conveyance. Nearest Post office, High school and Police station is at 10 Km and Government Hospital is at 23 Km from the station.
Pandiyantivu Lighthouse was first commissioned in 1845 and subsequent innovations were done in the year of 1906, 1935, 1980 and 1999. The light characteristic is white light flashing every 10 second and in addition to lighthouse, the station also operates other passive ATONs like DGPS, RACON and NAIS for the safe voyage in Indian waters.
