Katchal is an important island of the Nancowry group of islands. The island has two lighthouses one on the east and other on the west side. Katchal Island's area is 146.5 km2. It is approximately 305 km south to the capital Port Blair. The Katchal(west) Lighthouse is situated at the west coast of Katchal Island. The Katchal West lighthouse is 12 meter high GI trestle tower located close to the shores of Katchal West Bay and serves mainly the local fishing boats. It was established in 1985.It is an unmanned lighthouse. The lighthouse is approachable on the west coast only by department vessel up or any chartered vessel upto anchorage Point and by dinghy up to shore from the anchorage point. The lighthouse station is approached from shore by trekking through dense forest for 30 minutes
