Malpe Lighthouse
Malpe lighthouse is situated on North Island of Saint Mary Isles, a group of three small islands, in Udupi District, between Kundapur & Kaup Lighthouses in Karnataka state. The location is about 2.4 Km. from the Malpe fishing jetty & Malpe Beach & is approachable by boat. A small motor boat takes about 15 min. to reach the island beach. All the three islands are uninhabited. This light is monitored from Kaup Lighthouse.
The first Lighthouse was installed around the year 1901 by the British, when only a lantern house was erected on an elevated rock. This old lantern is still lying on the island in dilapidated condition. A new 12 m rectangle stone masonry light house tower was constructed in the year 1973, with AGA make flashing gas equipment inside BBT make 500mm drum optic & lantern. This system worked well till 2004, but afterwards the light function was severely impaired due to shortage of gas equipment spares and also due to shortage of Acetylene gas.
The light was taken over by Mumbai Directorate in the year 2012 and the operation has been restored on 26th May 2012 using modern Solar based LED light equipment, having 12 NM range. The Malpe Lighthouse is a important Lighthouse for local port and heavy traffic of port.
