Kovilthottam LIGHTHOUSE
Kovilthottam Light house is approachable by road via Chavara,Kollam(Quilon),The light house has been provided to serve the port of Neendakara situated at the entrance to Ashtamudi backwaters. The coastal belt up to Kayamkulam is rich in rare earths which is the principal export commodity from NeendakaraPort .Prior to the construction of the Light house there was a flag staff standing at the spot. A wooden trestle tower was erected subsequently and a flashing DA gas light was commissioned on February 1953. This was meant to be a temporary arrangement till the masonry tower was completed during 1960-61. The equipment supplied by M/s.BBT,Paris was installed and commissioned into service on January 1962.The acetylic gas ASR 25 mantle operated emergency source was replaced by 12V 100 W halogen lamp in a 200mm optic out side the lantern on 14th February 1999,This was subsequently replaced to automatic change over with in lantern House. The electronics flasher unit damaged completely on 15/03/17 due to lightning . The stand by jyothipunj flasher unit to 100watt halogen lamp modified by connecting a solid state relay in between Jyothi punj unit output and 500w halogen lamp. And I KVA inverter installed for back up on 17/03/2017.
