Murud Janjira Lighthouse
Murud Janjira or just Janjira, is a famous sea port in Maharashtra located in Raigad district of the state, just 165 km away from India’s financial capital South of Mumbai. When the British came to the Konkan area the repeated attacks of Marathas against the Janjira casual, Janjira state was administrated as a part of the Deccan States Agency of the Bombay Presidential founded in 1799. In the 19th century the rulers maintained military force of 123 men. Following the independence of India in 1947, the state was merged in India. As per the admiralty List of lights ( AOLOL) this Lighthouse having Sr No 0559 on Bandar Hill about 80m above MSL with Fl( 2)W15 seconds provided for plying the fishing boats,vessels in the vicinity of Murud Janira Harbour. The Lighthouse located on Bandar Hill at Murud Janjira , District Raigad which is 165 km away from Mumbai towards south. Nearest town is Alibaug 40km There is no approach road from foot of hill to top of hill and approachable on foot having distance of about 800 meters through “ Gochar” revenue land by crossing thick bushes. As per Minutes of the 81st meeting of Central Advisory Committee for Lighthouses and as per Ministry of Shipping letter no. LH- 11o1g/3/2006-SLdated26.03.2007, it has been decided.that improvement/taking over of LocalLight will be done by DGLL. Accordingly Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Mumbai had taken over Local Light of Murud Janjira District – Alibaug, from Maharashtra Maritime Board on 02/11/2018.
