Nagapattinam was an important port of Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu state and it is situated on the entrance of Kaduveiyaru River. There is shoal near to the coast and the port has glorious history and it is having ISPS code. It is in existence since the great cholas. During those days flag staff was provided on which flag used to be hoisted to enable vessels enter the port area. As recently till about 1970’s there was a direct ships service between Penang (Malaysia), Singapore and Nagapattinam. The famous M.V.Chidambaram named vessel was operated regularly and it was destroyed in fire.

The Importance of Nagapattinam port and local fisherman are demanded and accordingly present lighthouse was constructed in 1967 and commissioned in presence of Shri Sardar Iqbal Singh, Honorable Deputy minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Shipping and Transport on 5th July, 1969. In 1985 the PV equipment was replaced with PRB-21 equipment with sealed beam lamps and after such equipment was changed with MBR-300 light beacon in 30-9-2010.

The Radio beacon equipment supplied by m/s.MACE and it was installed in the station in March-1992 and the Tide land Make RACON was installed in 03-9-1995. This same RACON was replaced with new one (Make: M/s PHAROS MARINE) in 21-12-2018. Presently 2nd phase static sensors / RADAR work is in progress in the lighthouse premises and 50% work were completed.
